In response to the strategies of "Beautiful China", "Healthy China 2030" and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and to promote the development of the industry, the Well Habitat Lab, the International Well Building Institute (IWBI), Beijing ZhongJianXie Certification Centre Co., Ltd. (JCC)and other relevant industry organisations at home and abroad have jointly released the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System (BETTER1.0) with "low carbon" and "health" as the core strategies and "digital" as the core engine. BETTER 1.0, guided by the WELL Healthy Building Standard and carbon emission calculation standards for various industries, is a pioneering approach to explore the health and environmental benefits of linking enterprises and projects, opening up new values for investment, and promoting the low-carbon and green digital transformation of the whole industry chain of the construction industry to achieve high-quality development.
BETTER 1.0 represents the sustainability responsibility of companies and projects throughout their life cycle, emphasising the comprehensive performance of companies in achieving low carbon emission reductions under a 'people-centred' approach.
BETTER 1.0 takes the building space as the core evaluation object, and extends to the products in the space, the companies providing services, the larger community and the city, from site selection, raw material supply, construction to production, operation and management, and other stages of the project life cycle, assisting the practitioner organisations to fully implement carbon neutral products and spaces, health performance evaluation, carbon inventory and post-health assessment, corporate low carbon ESG evaluation, and so on. The programme has been expanded and upgraded to take into account the characteristics of different industries and products.
To this end, the Well Habitat Lab, IWBI and JCC organised a seminar on the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System for High Quality Development and the launch of the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER1.0 on 28 October 2022 in Guangzhou, to launch the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER1.0 to groups and organisations, institutions and enterprises concerned about sustainable health in society, to help promote The launch of BETTER1.0 will help promote the development of public health and call on all people to be kind to the planet and achieve sustainable development.
Mr. Liang Hao, Director of the Green Building Development Division of the Technology and Industrialisation Development Centre of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said, "The Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER1.0 takes into account the needs of the policy and the market, meets the people's aspiration for a better life, and combines low carbon and health. We hope that the initiator can join hands with all parties in the society to further improve such a set of indicators as the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER1.0."
Ma Yu, Secretary General of the Digital China Alliance of the National Development Institute of Peking University, delivered a speech on behalf of the co-sponsors of the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER1.0. She mentioned that low carbon has become a hot topic in the domestic market in recent years, and that the construction industry is one of the most critical windows for China's carbon emission reduction actions, with huge room for emission reduction throughout the whole life cycle. She expressed her willingness to contribute to BETTER 1.0, a low-carbon and healthy digital standard system that can add happiness and well-being to society.
In the presence of the co-sponsors, the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard BETTER 1.0 was officially launched, with Ms. Xue Ya, President of IWBI Asia, and Mr. Wang Haishan, Chairman of JCC, introducing the conceptual basis and basic framework of the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard BETTER 1.0.
BETTER1.0 will be based on the three core pillars of promoting carbon neutrality, promoting health and environmental well-being, and integrating digital connectivity to empower people. The WELL Health Building Standard, WELL Healthy Communities Standard, WELL HSR and other tools will help China's low-carbon health cause to develop in high quality.
In terms of accounting methodology and technical support, BETTER 1.0, a digital standard system for low carbon health, will provide enterprises with tailor-made solutions for GHG emissions accounting and data collection that meet their business characteristics. It will help enterprises understand their own GHG emission characteristics and emissions, and prepare for carbon verification and future access to the national carbon market; and personnel to establish a management concept of carbon emission control, master the accounting methodology and strengthen the technical foundation.
BETTER 1.0, the digital standard system for low carbon health, will work together with the help of the whole society to achieve the goal of slowing down the trend of climate change, reducing the hazards of climate change and creating a community of human destiny; low carbon buildings linking low carbon communities, reducing carbon for cities and increasing benefits for sustainability.
As a representative of the co-sponsors, Mr. Wang Haishan read out the declaration of the Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER 1.0 initiative. It pledged to "actively implement green and low-carbon development practices in the future, enhance the efficiency of industry-wide carbon reduction efforts and contribute to the industry's more efficient achievement of the dual-carbon goal. We will promote healthy environmental well-being and use digitalisation as an engine to explore the health and environmental benefits of enterprises and projects under the guidance of the WELL Healthy Building Standard and carbon emission calculation standards for various industries, so as to build a better ecological and livable home for human beings. Let's join hands with the whole industry, with an open and win-win mindset, to join the cause of sustainable development and jointly draw a beautiful blueprint for future sustainable development."
Mr. Wei Jianxun, Technical Director of Green Low Carbon Business of JCC, shared the topic of "Building BETTER1.0 Green Low Carbon Support Services". Through the three sections of Green Low Carbon Certification Service, Green Low Carbon Assessment Service and Green Low Carbon Technical Support Service, he explained the green and dual carbon technical services support that can be provided for building materials products, building spaces, buildings and city levels under the BETTER1.0 framework.
Mr. Xue Shiwei, General Manager of the Double Carbon Business Unit of China Construction Institute of Double Carbon Strategy and China Construction Eco-Environment Group, gave an overview of the background of the 3060 carbon peaks and the zero emission technology system and shared relevant case studies, bringing to the audience thoughts on low carbon and healthy zero emission buildings.
Mr. Deng Xin, Assistant General Manager of China Shuifa Singyes Energy Holdings Ltd. presented "A Brief Analysis of the Full-Cycle Carbon Emission of China's First Zero-Energy Operating Building", which analyzed the full-cycle carbon emission of zero-energy buildings with actual cases.
At this point, the seminar on Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System for High Quality Development and the launching ceremony of Low Carbon Health Digital Standard System BETTER 1.0 came to a successful conclusion. BETTER1.0 will be officially launched on the stage of history and will be tested by the market and the industry. In the future, BETTER1.0 will promote the three core pillars of carbon neutrality, health and environmental well-being, and digital connectivity, and will use products, designs, services, buildings, communities and cities to practise low carbon health in every area we can reach.
